Example of Integer

An integer is a whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero.

An integer is a sub-category of numbers, specifically a subset of the real numbers. It can include any number that has no fractional or decimal part. It can be positive, negative, or zero. Hence, it can be said that the integer includes natural numbers (1, 2, 3, ...), zero (0) and the negatives of the natural numbers (−1, −2, −3, ...).

Examples of integers are: -83, -7, 1, 7, 15, 99, and 3,537.

Examples of numbers that are not integers are: -2.53, 1 1/2, 3.47, .096, and 5,746.8.

The set of integers is defined as:

Z = {..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...}

Integers are often denoted with the capital Z.
